How do i train my baby mule to stop kicking?

I have a 5 month old baby paso fino mule. I have never owned a horse until a year ago. Much less train one. We are currently weaning him from his mother and he is in my front yard. I was hoping to spend time with him but he keeps trying to kick me. I hd his trust for a week but then i had to go check on his mother for the weekend and the others nd now we are back in square one and he is worse then before. What can i do to stop the kicking? I don't want to sell him or put him down but i also don't have the money for a trainer. :( please help!
